Sustainability Platform Strategy — Future in Action

THE PROBLEM WORTH SOLVING

Cement accounts for roughly 8% of global CO₂ emissions. CEMEX, one of the world's largest construction materials companies, needed to move beyond compliance-level sustainability communications and build a platform credible enough to stand up to board-level scrutiny, scientific validation and global media, while genuinely reshaping how the company operated internally.

THE INSIGHT THAT UNLOCKED IT

Most corporate sustainability platforms are campaigns dressed up as commitments. The insight: the only way CEMEX's platform would be credible was if it was genuinely operational, science-validated targets, governance structures, and cultural alignment baked in from the start, not bolted on for communications. The platform had to be the transformation, not describe it.

WHAT I DID

Led end-to-end strategy development, designed and ran a stakeholder research programme (20+ in-depth interviews with senior CEMEX leaders across functions), synthesised findings into strategic pillars, and built the platform architecture. Created the conceptual and strategic framework that defined Future in Action as CEMEX's operational transformation roadmap, not a campaign. Developed the vision, the net-zero commitment structure (Scope 1, 2 and 3), and the governance model for Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and Race to Zero alignment.

THE IDEA IT BECAME

Future in Action, CEMEX's signature environmental platform, structured as a company-wide decarbonisation roadmap with legally and scientifically validated targets. Not a campaign. A transformation programme with communications built into it. Board-governed, externally validated, globally consistent.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Net-zero CO₂ commitment by 2050 established, with validated interim targets: 47% Scope 1 reduction, 65% clean energy use, significant Scope 3 cuts by 2030

  • CEMEX elevated as an industry leader in sustainability, backed by SBTi and Race to Zero partnerships

  • Board-level governance and global validation secured

  • Platform became CEMEX's primary sustainability communications asset globally
